I have long been a fan of the PBS News Hour. It is the finest non-magazine format news program on television and has been for decades. (The finest magazine format, bar none, is Frontline.) VGS's Radio Dial and New Philosophy.
The last year has been quite the experience. I have finally given up on the thought that the Internet is anywhere near the "democratic" place it is made out to be. It is unlikely that I will be posting as much in the future.
Still, the VGS blog family briefly had quite a success before its various silent partners reduced or completely withdrew their support. There was every reason to understand that a million hits per year was within reach in the near term. But the Net is entirely private property and the various free or advertising-based services are bound to have unspoken limitations corresponding to the proprietors' various agendas. Most bloggers will never bump up against the walls of their cage and all will go along believing the sky's the limit. All is as it is designed to be.
There are some things that can be accomplished at a few hundred hits per day (search-engines permitting), however, and I intend to forge ahead in a smaller way. The old Virtual Grub Street Computer Archive pages, the originals of which have been lost with the demise of the MyBlogSite blogging system, you may have noticed, have been spread amoung the various remaining members of the VGS blog family. The new numbers of Ted Kooser's "American Life in Poetry" column are now being posting at VGS's Palm Beaches Review journal/blog.
I will be building a number of new theme-pages (computer oriented and otherwise). The first is the Virtual Grub Street Radio Dial already in-progress in VGS's Indexes and Specialty Pages blog. I am an avid short-wave listener when I can find the time and have hunted down scores of of net-casts by short-wave stations large and small over the years. The Radio Dial will also include standard-band stations. Seven stations are presently listed and many programs and individual broadcasts. Both the number of stations and amount of related information will be greatly expanded in the coming weeks.

The 18th Annual Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Festival will occur October 6-9, 2005 in Lowell, Massachusetts. This year the theme is 'Jack's Roots.' The festival will examine the rich multi-ethnic, and literary heritage that influenced his work as well as his association with classical culture and contemporary events.
This year the festival coincides with the biennial University of Massachusetts Jack Kerouac Conference on Beat Literature.
The keynote speaker is Sam Kashner, author of the book, 'When I was Cool,' his account of being the first poetry student at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute. Kashner will speak on Friday afternoon at the O'Leary building, room 222, South Campus, which is located on Wilder Street.
Kerouac was a track and field athlete and a preliminary lead-in event that will occur the preceding Sunday, October 2, is the third annual running of the Kerouac 5K road race beginning near Kerouac Park and ending on Worthen Street.
On Thursday, October 6, Lowell's, Destination World will feature food, film, music, and readings in cooperation with Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! and the University of Massachusetts, with a focus on Franco-American culture with origins in Canada.
Numerous non-conference related events are happening in a number locations. Please check listings and schedules available from the Lowell National Historical Park and the Greater Merrimack Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau for times and locations.
--Saturday will feature tributes to Hunter S. Thompson, Lucien Carr, Robert Creeley, and Philip Lamantia. Poetrybay editor George Wallace is among those who will speak at the Lamantia tribute.
--There will be a talk on Allen Ginsberg by Bill Morgan as part of the Parker Lecture Series, following David Amram's Cairo to Kerouac music extravaganza at the Pollard Library.
--John Ventimiglia, widely known for his role in the film Jesus' Son and the character Artie Bucco on The Soprano's will be joining Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! with David Amram on Saturday night for an evening of Jazz in Jack's Town. Neil Cassady's son, John Allen Cassady, named after Jack (John) Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg will be joining Ventamiglia for an evening of Jazz that also celebrates the DVD release of a performance done by Cassady, Amram, and Steve Edington, at the 2004 LCK! Festival in Lowell. There will also be a raffle at the event for one (possibly two) of the now Baseball Hall of Fame famous Kerouac Bobbleheads!
--In addition to several Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP) hosted Kerouac-related walking tours and a boat tour, LNHP will host a bus tour and an evening walking tour led by Roger Brunelle. Also, there will be a Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! hosted tour of local establishments where Jack socialized with friends and family while living in Lowell during the mid-1960's.
--There will be open mics, a high school poetry contest, book signings, film showings, including one on Michael McClure and one on Charles Olson, nearly 30 events over four days. Admission is free to the vast majority of these events and minimal, or a small suggested donation, at the few that are not free.

Each artist has a private apartment and bath with
ample working space (including large studios for the

painters and other visual artists. Our colony chef
serves delicious vegetarian meals on weeknights and
the kitchen is kept stocked with basic supplies so
that residents may make other meals for themselves.
The stunning 200 acre Saltonstall Arts Colony is
located in Ithaca, New York in the heart of the
beautiful Finger Lakes region. The summer fellowship
competition is open to all artists and writers
throughout the entire state of New York (including
NYC.)

painting, collage and other two dimensional media on

(especially in the Finger Lakes region) through all
stages of the creative process -- from research,
development and creation through distributing and make
their work more accessible to the public. We serve NYS
artists and writers with grants, professional
development seminars, access to free studio space, and
summer fellowships that place them in residence at our
art colony. The general public benefits from cultural
programming with individual artists.
A diverse population of emerging, mid-career and
established NYS artists and writers have been in
residence here. The artists are given time, space and
support for their own creative research and risk
taking. As Edith Isaac Rose said, "The spacious,

of the group and our particular group formed a
community very quickly. All of us cherished having
continuous time to explore our work. When I think of

Fellows have said that our Colony provides one of the

outstanding NYS artists, including photographers,

largest network of direct support to independent
artists.

I have no blog yet, but I've written a rosegarden ebook. And I am running a rose garden ebook site. But blogging seems like more fun - it's interactive, whereas I rarely have discussions with my visitors. Well - come and check it out if you get time :-)

Front Page and the Treasure Coast Review.
I've spent the past couple of weeks putting together the pieces of the new Virtual Grub Street. When fate made a "malware blog" out of what was originally intended to be the "arts&lit blog" VGS, the arts and lit side got lost a bit in the shuffle. The recent additions are designed to give all of the categories of posts that appear in VGS a chance at "belonging".
In particular, I've combined and heavily modified two existing template designs which now appear at two new blogs: Virtual Grub Street's Front Page and the Treasure Coast Review. The look is a kind of souped-up-electronic-journal-look with three rows of links. Each of the new blogs has been given a stand-alone mainpage. One serves the original VGS blog as a journal front page and the other serves as a portal to arts and lit pieces that will be shared between the original VGS and Treasure Coast Review blogs. A row of horizontal links has been added to each page-header to facilitate moving back and forth between the blogs and journal pages.
As the name might imply, the Treasure Coast Review will also provide Virtual Grub Street with a regional/local side. The "review" aspect, as regards books, will be satisfied from the review copies I receive in-house from various publishers. The book reviews, then, will continue to be national rather than regional. Poetry will be the best I can assemble. I will not have time to consider submissions and any poems and reviews by others will be strictly by invitation. As for the rest, I intend to review regional arts, theater, restaurants, etc., as the opportunity arises. The first regional page(s) will be an events calendar.
While there are still a few small bugs to be worked out, the templates for Front Page and the Treasure Coast Review are generally working quite well. I intend to have fun following Virtual Grub Street and my freelance and computer work wherever they will take me. Perhaps you will stop in to see how things are going from from time to time.

The following notice has been floating around in the mailbag for a few days and seems worth passing along to those interested in Virtual Grub Street's literary side.

I am pleased to announce that Zack Rogow is the new editor and artisticdirector of TWO LINES.
Zack is taking over for our previous managing editor, Shevi Berlinger, whois returning to her native New York to begin her graduate career and becomeinvolved in the literary community there. Zack is also taking on theeditorial duties and many of the artistic functions that I have served sinceI co-founded TWO LINES in 1993. I will continue to serve as editor emerituson the TWO LINES editorial board and as president of the board of the Centerfor the Art of Translation (CAT), and will retain the lead role in planningthe Center's future. I will be working in close partnership with Zack onartistic and editorial matters and will continue to help out on many TWOLINES and CAT projects.
Zack Rogow is a poet and translator of French literature. He was a recentfinalist for the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize and theNorthern California Book Award for his new translation of Colette’s GreenWheat. He is also a past recipient of the PEN/Book-of-the-Month ClubTranslation Prize and the BABRA award for translation. At the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, he founded the Lunch Poems Reading Series with RobertHass. He teaches in the MFA in Writing Program at the California College ofthe Arts.
We feel very fortunate to have found someone with decades of experience inthe literary community as a writer, translator, editor, and reading seriescoordinator who has also contributed to TWO LINES several times over theyears and served as a Board Director of the Center.

More on Variant ADW_ELITEBAR.D.
A March 2005 forum thread at Midtown Computer Systems Enterprise provides more detail on ADW_ELITEBAR.D . It's a bit garbled, though: intertwined with discussions about how malware gets installed on computers and about the relative merits of Firefox compared to Internet Explorer. But some things are clarified in the course of "bu2's" (the plaintiff's) attempts to remove this resistant variant of SearchMiracle/EliteBar.
First he informs us of the original condition of the machine, which can be quite helpful:
It is a standard XP with two top-end commercial anti-virus programs. Moreover, one of the anti-virus programs -- Trend Micro's PC-Cillin -- we already know, from VGS's article "Diabolical New EliteBar Variant Strikes the Web!!!!", has claimed that it is able to remove EliteBar.D (a claim that Gian Carlo, at SimplyTech, disputes).
Next, he lets us follow the decision-making process:
The utility that Trend Micro claimed would remove EliteBar.D is "tmntsrv.exe". Whether due to the nature of the malware, his failure to properly deploy the removal tool or some other problem, the program fails even to run properly. He considers downloading and running the SimplyTech Elite Toolbar Remover.
The Beta version of MicroSoft Antispyware, we learn, was not able even to detect ADW_ELITEBAR.D. At some point bu2 (exactly when is not clear) does use "the special Scan for Spyware feature" provided with his Trend Micro service. It detects and briefly removes the malware which immediately thereafter reinstalls. Whether it actually reinstalled on reboot is not stated but it seems likely.
Next he tries SimplyTech's EliteBar Removal Tool. At this point, both SimplyTech and he are not aware that there is a variant of EliteBar that the removal tool won't remove:

Once the system is clean I may well switch to another Internet Browser. I am not happy with MS leaving so many holes in their software. Also their Beta Antispyware, while pretty good, cannot even see the Elite Bar!? Find-It Web Search has Been Shut Down.
The malware sites http://find-it.web-search.la/ and http://www.lycos.la/ have recently been shutdown. The following message appears on the sites:
If you received an email from a bank, eBay, or PayPal directing you to visit this site to update your account details, please click here
The site was also used to originate phishing e-mails. The link is to a simple Citibank primer on spotting and avoiding phishing schemes.
The domain web-search.la [lycos.la] has been terminated for abuse.

Diabolical New EliteBar Variant Strikes the Web!!!!
Giancarlo Calo, of SimplyTech.it, freeware Baron of the Internet, by virtue of his EliteBar Removal Tool, reports that a new malware variant has appeared on the net that Trend Micro has designated ADW_ELITEBAR.D. The first contacts with the new variant are described in an April 1 through 19 May, 2005, thread at Simply Tech's EliteBar forum. In the words of Calo, in the original April 1, 2005, forum posting:
Well, as far as we are working on this pest we can say that it is NOT an EliteToolbar malware! It is acting in a half-way as a virus and half-way as a malware/spyware. It is using some new typologies of attack we have never watched before... We don't know if its a new product of the same guys who released the EliteToolbar malware, but we can say it is not an EliteToolbar malware and we are not yet able to do an automatic remover for it.
According to Calo, Trend Micro seems to have felt, at one point, that its commercial software could remove the infection but Simply Tech still found the malware intact after Trend Micro's process. The Trend Micro ADW_ELITEBAR.D information page presently lists only manual removal instructions.
This is not the only item that is unclear. TM desribes one toolbar on the ADW_ELITEBAR.D page while Calo provides a photo of an infection that leaves two toolbars, one top and one bottom. Just how these inconsistencies will be resolved remains to be seen.
All of that aside, Calo describes a truly diabolical new approach to malware:
In at least some instances, the help provided will provide SimplyTech with much needed data in return. It is sure to help the effort to head off this variant before it ends up on all of our computers.

It doesn't install any dll and changes the name of its executable on a randomic basis using real words took in documents of the user. It also traces and log the activity of the user and writes a log file with the attributes used for the system files. It works in low-level with the system and it is impossible to dump it from the system memory because it fools you directing your attention on a process that is not the real responsable of the infestation.This would appear to mean that the main executable file randomly changes its name while the infection is in the computer such that it is all but impossible to target and delete it. The naming process ("...using real words [taken from] documents [in the user's computer]") makes it difficult to tell legit from infected files or to locate the infected file through file searches. An excellent picture of the double toolbar arrangement is located at the forum posting. Giancarlo Calo, and Simply Tech, offer what little help they can for the time being:

EliteBar Removal Tool Updates to 1.3.0!!!!!
or How to Remove SearchMiracle/EliteBar (Alt. 1, Rev. 2)Giancarlo Calo, over at SimplyTech.it, is staying aggressive with his freeware EliteBar Removal Tool. Simply Tech's description of the reason why SearchMiracle/EliteBar is so difficult to remove verifies the information in the various Virtual Grub Street articles over the past several months:
Actually some software like Spybot v.1.3, CWShredder v.2.12, Noadware,Adaware v.6, SpyNuker 2004 and SBC Yahoo! Anti-spy have no success in deleting this very frustrating malware. These programs find and delete it, but it keeps coming back since this new variant is very difficult to remove from theThis would seem to be a trick that the newer malware/adware products are widely copying. Perhaps this is the reason that the EliteBar Removal Tool has added so many porducts to the list of infections it removes. It is certainly the reason that most HijackThis and manual removal instructions direct the user to do main and downloader file deletions while in Safe Mode.

The main problem is that the malware creates a lot of registry entries and executes at PC startup, winding itself into RAM and deletes its own *.exe from the C:\Windows\System32 directory.
When ordinary tools try to remove it, they only clean the registry calls, the C:\Windows\EliteToolbar directory and the cabinets files where it originated from, but they don't take any action against the malware itself that is currently running in RAM and waiting for the PC OS to be shut down only to repeat the infestation once again!

Computer Tips and How To's
The following new link to Obiter Dicta has recently been posted: Computer's Tip's and How To's (in the sidebar). CTHT is a new blog with a single post as this is being written. That post is chock-a-block full of helpful information and downloads, however, and I, for one, intend to stop by to check out its progress on a regular basis.
